  • Luck – A Minute Too Early, A Minute Too Late

I met someone who said he doesn’t believe in luck. At first, I thought that was impressive. It gives off this cool sense of doubting the unseen and trusting in yourself. If something goes wrong, then it must be due to something real — something you can fix — not just chance. It made me feel a bit ashamed, honestly. I’ve used luck as an excuse when things didn’t go my way. But after thinking about it for a few days, I started to wonder: is luck really that easy to deny?

Before talking about luck, you need to understand what it actually is — or at least what you think it is. Personally, I think luck is just the probability of uncertainty. If you have good luck, things tip in your favor. If your luck is bad, then they tip against you.

Take something simple: arriving at a bus stop without checking the timing. Someone with great luck gets there just as the bus arrives — no time wasted. Someone with bad luck shows up just as the bus is leaving. The time difference might only be a minute, but the feeling between the two situations is like heaven and earth.

Now, what if someone checks the schedule and times it perfectly so they arrive with the bus? Do they have good luck? You could say that, but remember — luck is tied to uncertainty. If you’re certain about something, where’s the luck in that? Knowing the bus timing removes uncertainty, and with it, removes luck from the situation. So is that how you deny luck — by removing every trace of uncertainty?

But what happens when the bus is delayed? Or the app shows the wrong time? What if the person’s phone dies and they can’t check anything? All of that brings uncertainty back in — and with it, luck. What if something unexpected happens on the way to the stop? Or, in the most extreme case, what if they get hit by lightning?

To truly deny luck, you’d have to make sure the bus is always on time, the app is always accurate, and your phone never fails. You’d have to avoid any unexpected encounters, and even dodge lightning. And honestly, if someone can manage all that, then luck is the least of their worries.
